Extending a Helping Hand

We depend on our volunteers, who donate thousands of hours to help keep the Park operating. Volunteers are recognized each year at a volunteer appreciation banquet.

Opportunities

  1. Front desk- greet visitors and collect zoo fees
  2. Storytime- read a story each week, take pre-school children for a short walk in the Zoo, and provide a craft.
  3. Docents- (Volunteer Teachers) help with:

  • Guided tours for school and adult groups
  • Zoo camp
  • Outreach educational programs
  • Assist with many of the special events

Become a Volunteer

You can help in many other ways, so if you would like to help the zoo in some way, you can contact Kathy Hampton or Sandra Cosand at (575) 887-5516 to volunteer.

Learn More about Becoming a Docent

Imagine watching the face of a child as he/she experiences their first visit to the Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park. You can be a part of this rewarding interaction as a volunteer educator at the Zoo by becoming a Docent!

Docent training occurs one day a week for eight weeks beginning in February. Each week a different topic (what docents do, mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, invertebrates, plants, hands-on activities) are presented.

Those who complete the training, will receive the Docent Manual, a Docent t-shirt and Docent name badge.

For more information call Sandra Cosand at (575) 887-5516.

Docents are:

  • Volunteer educators
  • Informed
  • Visible
  • Accessible
  • Friendly
  • Enthusiastic
  • Partners in the care and conservation of the Chihuahuan Desert and its inhabitants, both plants and animals.
